Edgewater E-Section Ballfield
The word “Muster” dates back into the 1400’s in the military, referring to a “gathering of the troops.” Fire departments gather and compete in a series of events to determine who is the best!
The EPVFD competed against the Broad Channel Vol Fire Department and Edgewater Athletic Association in contests of skill and grit!
THANK YOU to everyone who made this event possible! It was a day none of us will ever forget!
News 12 Reports on the EPVFD Muster!
Midnight Alarm simulates a fire call in the middle of the night. Competitors start out "sleeping" by lying down on a cot at the starting line. At the starting signal, competitors must run a distance of about 25ft. to the dressing area where they must don firefighter's gear. After they are all dressed, they then must mount the fire apparatus and close all doors to show the truck is ready to roll. Fastest time wins.
Event Winner: Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Dept.
In a hose lay competitors must unroll a length of hose into a flat, unkinked position, and then roll up the unfurled hose back into a tight rolled position. Fastest time wins.
Event Winner: Edgewater Park Volunteer Fire Dept.
In the bucket brigade race, competitors must work together in a bucket brigade to transfer a set amount of water, such as 25 gallons, from one container to another spilling as little as possible. The water must be drawn by buckets from a small pool. These buckets are then passed from member to member roughly 10 feet to a "thrower" the thrower then throws the water on the pitched roof of the building. The water runs off the roof into a rain gutter which drains into a barrel which is about 25-30 gallons in capacity, competition ends when barrel is full. Fastest time wins.
Event Winner: Edgewater Park Volunteer Fire Dept.
Bread and butter of engine operations is getting fast water onto the fire. In the Hose Efficiency (Also known as First Water Contest) participants must quickly connect a series of hoses to a water source and knock down targets with their water streams. Competition ends when a team has knocked down all of it's targets. Fastest time wins.
Event Winner: Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Dept.
