In 1922, while Edgewater was still a “camp” filled mostly with sand dunes and summer bungalows, neighbors came together to form an organization dedicated towards protecting the lives and property in their community, taking the motto “Neighbors Helping Neighbors”. While many outside of our community often point to Edgewater’s beautiful waterfront or our quaint “small town in the big city” feel as its defining features, we residents know that what truly defines Edgewater Park is our culture of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors”. We all work together to form a safe and enriching community and know that we can rely on each other when tough times arrive. Our Volunteer Fire Department has been the living embodiment of this culture for the last century.
Throughout 2022 we will be celebrating 100 years of fulfilling this motto with a series of events and special memorabilia, some of which are previewed below. We hope you will join us as we look back to all the Department has accomplished over the last century from our beginnings as a bucket brigade to today being the ONLY Volunteer Fire Department still active in the Bronx. We also turn to the community to help us peer forward to a future where we continue to fulfill our motto for another 100 years.
